Abby[excited] It's a beautiful word for it! It's a machine discovering that comedy is—

Boyd[jumping in] —a legal department. [short pause] But you go first.

AbbyOkay. So a stand-up comedian, writing in Chortle, built an AI clone of himself to do his job for him. [statement] His framing, not ours — he wanted the job done. He fed fifteen years of his own routines into it.

Boyd[snappy] Fifteen years. So the machine has more of his material than he does.

AbbyAnd here's the thing, Boyd. He says the robot was too polite to replicate his deep hatred of the world. It can build the joke — the setup, the turn — and then at the punchline it just... [short pause] declines.

Boyd[thoughtful] Hm. [short pause] Because the punchline needed him to genuinely resent somebody.

Abby[excited] Yes! And that's gorgeous. A machine that has read everything accidentally found the one ingredient it can't source. Comedy is metabolised misery, and the misery has to be yours—

Boyd[jumping in] —or it's someone's, and that someone sues. [statement] Abby, it isn't being kind. It's being liability-managed. That's a compliance layer with a microphone.

Abby[angry] Oh, come on—

Boyd[cut in] The write-up literally jokes about it — a neural network trained by earnest Californians cannot generate genuine human misery. [snappy] Earnest Californians. That's the tell. That's a policy document, not a soul.

AbbyBut the effect is the same! Whatever the reason, the thing it couldn't do was the thing that mattered—

Boyd[jumping in] —the thing it wasn't allowed to do. Those are different. One's a limit. One's a setting.

Abby[long pause] ...Okay. That's a better sentence than mine.

Boyd[snappy] It's one comedian and one bot, and he wrote it up himself. Nobody proved anything about whether machines can be funny. There's no data here. There's a man and his mornings off.

Abby[thoughtful] Fine. But I'm keeping the beautiful version in my pocket. Right. Moving on.

AbbyAustralia's top music charts are going to ban AI songs. That's Inquirer dot net, reporting on the charts there. And honestly — good? Somebody's finally drawing a line for working musicians.

Boyd[snappy] Drawing it where?

AbbyWhere — where it needs to be. On the side of people who—

Boyd[jumping in] —no, I mean physically where. Autotune? Fine? A synth? A ghostwriter? A session drummer replaced by a drum loop in nineteen eighty-seven — was that the fall of man, or was that Tuesday?

Abby[laughs] Okay, that's fair.

Boyd[statement] And the story doesn't say how they'd detect it. We don't know the mechanism. That's not me being cynical, that's just the gap in the page.

Abby[thoughtful] So it's a declaration form.

Boyd[snappy] It's probably an honour system with a press release. A rule you can't test is a rule you can't enforce.

AbbyI keep picturing chart officials as bouncers. Clipboards. Leaning into a chorus going, [loud] nah mate, no soul in that one, off you go—

Boyd[jumping in] —while a man with a laptop and a real cough gets waved straight through. [short pause] I'm not against it. I'd just like to know what the door policy is.

Abby[statement] Deal. Someone tried, and that's more than most charts have managed.

Boyd[snappy] Something weird.

AbbySomething weird! Go.

Boyd[snappy] An AI customer-service bot for an airline. Flight's delayed. The bot apologises. Then it keeps apologising — [short pause] and somewhere in there it offers the passenger free tickets to destinations the airline does not fly to. New York Times.

Abby[surprised] Wait. [short pause] Doesn't fly to? At all?

Boyd[statement] Doesn't fly there.

AbbyDid anyone try to redeem it? Because I would. I'd walk up to a desk with a code for a city they've never—

Boyd[jumping in] —I'm not going to explain how it happened, Abby. [short pause] Remorse with no budget and no route map. That's the whole story.
